The director is Neil Blomkemp. He is best known as the co-writer and director of the movie, District 9. Many of the actors are concerned about chemicals in professional makeup and hair products. So I have researched and found hair care products that are organic and free from all or most chemicals.

Nearly all of the professional shampoos still contain cleaning agents such as Sodium lauryl sulfate and Sodium laureth sulfate that strip away body and color, leaving the hair dried out and dull. Other harmful chemicals used in hair care products include Propylene glycol, a cosmetic mineral oil, which is also found in brake and hydraulic fluids, anti-freeze and airplane de-icers. Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl) are preservatives that inhibit microbial growth and extend product shelf life. Most cosmetics use synthetic colors and dyes, which are made from coal tar and contain heavy metal salts that deposit toxins onto the skin.

Studies have shown that 40% of what you put on your skin can be absorbed into your system. Some researchers believe that 85% – 95% of cancer can be traced to environmental exposure from the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the chemicals we are exposed to.

Onesta is one of my favorite professional hair care products that are natural, plant-based, free from Parabens, Sodium lauryl sulfate, Sodium laureth sulfate, Propylene glycol, DEA, TEA, colors, dyes, animal-testing and animal ingredients. Since there are no preservatives, it is best to by these products in small bottles and containers. Onesta is made in the USA and can be purchased at professional hair care stores.

Alcove shampoos and conditioners are another one of my favorite products. They are Sulfate free, salt free and Paraben free. Alcove products work well on color treated hair. Their shampoos offer a very rich and thick lather and are enriched with Oligo’s exclusive microcapsule technology. Microcapules Technology is a system that provides the hair with precisely the nutrients it needs. As the hair is dried, either naturally or with a hair dryer, the microcapsules disintegrate and release a dosed selection of essential nutrients. Alcove is a Canadian product that can be purchased at a salon or at a professional hair care outlet.

To learn more about Onesta go to: www.onestahaircare.com

To learn more about Alcove go to : www.oligoprofessionnel.com

Ready! Set! All 8 stations will be busy primping, styling, tweezing, painting, gluing, curling, straightening, blow drying and styling. Danna Rutherford (Hairstylist) and Patricia Murray (Makeup Artist) are the first to arrive at 4:30am. Setting up their stations, heating up irons, reading over scripts and call sheets.
At 5:00am, Aly Michalka and Ashley Tisdale (with her cute little pooch 'Maui') arrive. It's a 2 hour process.

Aly spends her first hour in the makeup chair. Her makeup artist, Patricia Murray applies a few drops of my " I Love My Botanicals" Anti Wrinkle Serum (100% Organic, Chemical Free). The Serum helps the makeup go on smoothly and evenly. It also helps to fill in lines and creases before the makeup is applied. This Anti Wrinkle Serum contains lavender essential oil and tea tree oil, which help to heal blemishes and skin irritations she may have. Then, Armani liquid makeup and Laura Mercier Luminating Foundation is applied to her skin and Smashbox Eyeshadows are used on her naturally large, almond shaped eyes. Her eyeliner is from Smashbox. The individual eyelashes are applied with my 'I Love My Lashes" black adhesive. This latex-based glue is stronger than duo and has no formaldehyde or harsh chemical fumes. It's extra strong so that the lashes last thru dance rehearsals and the heat from the studio lights.

Now Aly will go down to the other end of the makeup trailer. Danna Rutherford (hairstylist) will begin by spritzing White Sands Firm Hold Liquid Texture spray onto Alys' wet hair. Then with a diffuser on the blow dryer, her soft curls are dried. A 1 inch barrel iron is used on a few of the curls to create an even curl look all over. Finishing with a little Redken hairspray on the roots. A little Redken Water Wax is applied on the ends to keep the curls separated and to control the ends.

Ashley starts in the 'hair' chair. Danna (hairstylist) will blow dry the hair extensions with extra care. Then the 1 1/2 inch barrel curl iron is used all over for soft curls . No hairspray is used, just a little dab of Graham Webb Brit Style Styling Paste on the ends to give it hold and to control frizz. Now to the makeup station...... makeup artist, Amy VanWarmer, preps Ashley's face with a few drops of my "I Love My Botanicals" Anti Wrinkle Face Serum. The serum contains essences of lavender, to calm and soothe the skin while the sandalwood oil heals and the evening primrose oil shrinks the pores and reduces puffy skin. Amy applies a natural skin tone base of a mix of Armani and DuWop liquid makeup. and a finishing powder from DuWop (Bronze Rush). The eyes are done with soft colors from Smash Box. Individual eyelashes are applied with my black eyelash glue from "I Love My Lashes". The extra hold glue keeps the lashes in place for a full 12 hour working day.

Order your fabulous Eyelash Extensions Kit and Eyelash Glue here:
www.ilovemylashes.com

Order your 100% Organic, Chemical Free, Anti Wrinkle Face Serum here:
www.ilovemybotanicals.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ilovemylashes.blogspot.com/2010/08/ready-set-go.html' title='Ready! Primping and styling and making sure every hair was in place for the actor interviews, with EPK (Electronic Press Kit). The main actress is Elizabeth Mitchell (aka Erica), Morena Baccarin (aka Anna), Christopher Shyer (aka Marcus), Lourdes Benedicto (aka Val), Laura Vandervoot (aka Lisa). Each interview took 20 minutes , so a few of us Makeup Artists started chatting about skin care and makeup products. We try to research any new skin products , hair products and makeup before we decide to use it on the actors. No actor wants extra chemicals on their face, hair or body. Many of the actors are wearing makeup for 12 hours or longer. Proper cleansing and prepping of their skin in important. Finding a chemical free face cream that is hydrating, yet healing and that does not leave a greasy residue is hard to find. I have developed a few hair and face serums that contain no chemicals, preservatives, and contain 100% Organic Botanicals.

The food and drug industry is deceptive about what is written on the labels of food, medications, and body care products. Did you know that there are more than 25 different names for MSG? 25-30 per cent of the population reacts to MSG (monosodium glutamate). Some side effects are migraine headaches, seizures, asthma, depression, hives and skin rashes. Read the labels before you buy. I thought I should pass this on to my readers.

Twelve national health and environmental organizations are calling on Health Canada to speed up the process it uses to deal with toxins under the Chemical Management Plan and promote safer alternative products.
They are found in cosmetics such as perfume, hairspray, skin creams and cleansers, or in common household products such as, window cleaners, floor care products, pesticides and carpet cleaners.

The chemicals are:

* Pigment Red3 (2-Naphthalenol): found in nail polish, soap bars, plastic colorants and industrial painting inks.
*DEGME (2-Methoxyethoxy): a solvent found in household paints, pesticides, floor care products, window washer fluids, skin creams, cleansers, hairspray, and perfumes.
* 2-MEA (2-Methoxyethanol acetate): found in nail polish, dry cleaning treatments and glues.
* 2-Methoxypropanol: it is found in nail polish enamel and remover, hair conditions and sprays, false eyelash adhesives and removal solvents, and pesticides.

Make sure you read the ingredients in your products. And if there is no list on the packaging, you can write to the manufacturer and they will send it to you.

"I Love My Lashes", DO NOT have any of these ingredients.

"I Love My Botanicals" DO NOT have any of these ingredients.

"I Love My Lashes" glue ingredients are: Latex, Aqua, Sodium Polyacrylate, Sodium dicyclopentadiene, Dimethicone, Quaternium 15, Ammonium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide, Fragrance.

"I Love My Botanicals" face and body Serums ingredients are: all natural botanicals, Certified Organic and Wild-Harvested essential oils

How Important are Essential Oils

January 15/10

Do you know what is in your face creams, body lotions, shampoos, and makeup? Most of our skincare products are full of preservatives, fillers, water, parabens, mineral oils, alcohol, detergents and petrochemicals. These can all create allergies and skin irritations. Most cosmetics use formaldehyde, methylisothiazolinones and DMDM hydantonin to extend the shelf life. Genetics plays the largest role in your skin's behavior. Sensitivity level determines resistance and tolerance. Hormone levels determines your breakouts. Bacteria level determines inflamation and infection on the skin. This in turn can create acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, pimples, chapped skin, cold sores, rashes, couperose (thread veins, congested capillaries). Here are a few natural ingredients that can heal, soothe, restore and rejuvenate your skin. With the right combination and proper mixing of botanical oils, you can restore the youthful glow and elasticity to your skin. Order your Botanical Serums now.

Sandalwood I have had a chance to work in the Makeup and Hair trailer on a few of the Feature Films such as;
Tron ( starring, Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde),
Percy Jackson and the Olympians ( starring, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Logan Lerman),
The Death & Life of Charlie St. Cloud (starring, Zach Efron, Kim Bassinger, Amanda Crew),
The A Team ( starring, Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Clinton 'Rampage' Jackson, Jessica Biel).
Long hours and 7 day work weeks are quite common on film work. Actors and crew members crave a good nights sleep. Cast can only dream about having time to relax . That's where the Hair and Makeup Team comes in!!
With 40 foot trailers; equipped with surround sound, televisions, computers, mood lighting, aroma therapy and a lot of laughter. Ipods are tuned to sounds of easy listening jazz or reggae or some alternative adult music. At the end of a 14 hour day, the actors come back to a 'safe haven' in the Hair and Makeup Trailer. They relax in the hairstylist's reclining chair, getting their hair washed and having designer conditioners massaged into their heads, releasing the tension and stress from their long day. Then the Makeup Artists use their gentle, facial cleansers and remove fx scars, and fx prosthetics, heavy makeups and sunscreens. Hot towels and facial steamers remove dirt, smoke and chemical residue from their skin. Finally, the makeup chair is reclined, and the facial serums and hydrating creams and vitamin enriched oils, are massaged gently into their delicate, tender skin. Ahhhh, that's feels so great, let's do it all again tomorrow!

Face Serums and Anti wrinkle Creams go to:
www.ilovemybotanicals.com

Do It Yourself Facial Massage

November 2009
The Benefits of a facial massage

Facial massage is a great way to loosen muscles and to provide a quick feeling of rejuvenation. It's an enjoyable way to relieve muscle tension in your face and improve blood and lymph circulation. Massaging your face will bring blood to the surface, clear out puffiness and will reduce fatigue in your skin. You can perform these techniques when you need a moment to relax, like after a stressful morning at work or between meetings, or while your laying in the bathtub.
You can use any of the all natural, organic, botanical, face serums from I Love My Botanicals line. Use a face serum that is suitable for your skin.

Steps For A Facial Massage

1) Apply one pump of facial serum in the palm of your hand and rub both hands together. This should be enough for a 5 minute massage.
2) Cupping both hands over your nose and inhale 3 times, taking in the refreshing lavender aroma when using my face serum. Then use both hands and pat the serum all over your face, eyes, and neck.
3) Neck Stroking, begins at the base of the throat. Use a gentle upward and outward stroke. Repeat 3 times.
4) Chin Pinching, is done with both hands, gently pinch your skin using your thumb and index finger. Gently pinch the skin along the jawbone and up towards the earlobes. Repeat 3 times.
5) Small Circles, are done with your middle fingers. Move your middle fingers in small circles, starting at the forehead, around the eyes, down the nose, across the cheeks, chin, neck, and decolletage(cleavage area).
6) Eye Tapping can be done using your middle fingers. Lightly tap around the eyes, moving your fingers 1 inch at a time across the brow bone , around the outer edge of your eyes , then under the eyes along the bone. Repeat 3 times.
7) Ear Massage, is done by forming a "V" with your index and and middle fingers. Place your index finger behind the ear and the middle finger on the skin in front of the ear. Move the "V" up and down a few times, pressing firmly. Rub the ear lobes and along the edges of the ear.
8) Piano Tapping your face by using all your fingers, in a quick, light tapping motion. Starting at the top of your forehead and working down your face , to your neck and decolletage (cleavage)
9) Press and Release by placing both hands firmly over your entire face and press firmly against your face and hold for 5 seconds. These release quickly. Repeat 3 times.

If face massaging is done on a regular basis, it will increase circulation and will help to retain moisture, giving you a healthy glow!

for Facial Serums, go to:
www.ilovemybotanicals.com

No Harsh Chemical Here!

I LOVE this stuff!!!! I bought the glue only, not the kit as I already have quite a selection of cluster eyelashes. I've been looking for something longer wearing but not like the semi-permanent adhesives that need to be applied by an esthetician. This is it! Doesn't smell or sting plus the ingredients are all listed. I asked another company for their list of ingredients and didn't get it. Not reassuring. I love this stuff!

Ban On Chemicals In Cosmetics

December 2008

On November 11/08, an article was written in the Toronto Star.

The adhesive glue in my eyelash extensions kit, do not have any of these ingredients.
"I Love My Lashes" glue ingredients are: Latex, Aqua, Sodium Polyacrylate, Sodium dicyclopentadiene, Dimethicone, Quaternium 15, Ammonium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide, Fragrance.

You can read the article here at;
Canada: Call for ban on chemical in cosmetics, cleaners

Permanent Makeup For Thinning Eyebrows

October 2008

Last week ,I spent a few hours with Shauna Magrath, a certified micro-pigmentation artist. She and I worked together in the 90's on many films such as X files, Blade Trinity II, and The Glass Cockpit. She has applied makeup to many actors including, Hillary Duff, Meg Ryan, Gillian Anderson, Dominic Purcell, Jensen Ackels and David Duchovny.
Shauna has expanded her talents to the real world, and has set up a makeup service boutique called the Beauty Ink Gallery in the South Granville Lofts in Vancouver, for Micro-Pigmentation or otherwise known as Permanent Tattoo Makeup. This service provides women and men, with the option of having there eyes, brows, lips permanently enhanced. Shauna uses only Organic and Inorganic pigment colors, that last 5 - 10 years. There is no Iron Oxide in her colors, so there is less chance for the color to change with time. The color will fade if it is continually exposed to the sun. Colors that are made with iron oxide will eventually change from black to blue, otherwise known as blue brows.
I let Shauna fill and reshape my thin, short eyebrows with a pigment color (that she custom mixed), to a light, warm brown. My brows look fantastic!
The idea of Permanent Tattoo Makeup, Micro-Pigmentation, is to enhance your facial features, not to make your face look like it has a lot of makeup on.
No Drag Queen Looks! Please!
Corrective makeup can be done as well. Stretch marks can be diminished and white sun spots can be filled in. Women that have gone thru breast surgery, can have a new areola tattooed on. This is definitely the new wave of makeup for the busy mom, the full time career woman, or for those who have aging eyesight.

Many celebrities have Permanent Tattoo Makeup: Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears, Drew Barrymore, Victoria Beckham, Jessica Alba, Halle Barry, Beyonce, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Keifer Sutherland, Robert Downey Jr., Bruce Willis.

Book your free consultation with Shauna (604)639-3609

check out her website.
Go to; www.beautyink.ca

EYELASH GLUE - New Syringe Design Complimented

September 8/08
I just had an email sent to me. I thought I would share it with all my customers out there in Eyelash Extensions World!

Hi there,
I just wanted to comment on the latest shipment of adhesive that I received from you.
I don’t know if the actual syringe has been changed or just the cap for it, but what a difference! I am very pleased with this small change.
With your previous syringes, while I loved the product, I always had to waste too much of it, because I could not control the amount that would come out at one time. I don’t know if this was the syringe itself, or whether it was because the previous cap allowed the product inside to dry slightly, causing some resistance when I attempted to press the plunger, so that when I finally pushed through the resistance, I ended up with too much force, and therefore, too much product.
These latest syringes work perfectly, and I can discharge exactly as much, or as little, adhesive as I like.
Thank you!

Debbie, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Dear Debbie
Thanks for your comments. I love it when I hear back from my customers whether it is positive or negative. I will always strive to make the product better for everyone. I will post your testimonial on the website.

Dear Kandace
You’re very welcome Kandace. Thanks for a great product. By the way, another thing I really like about it is that the adhesive dries to a soft, flexible material, and not hard and brittle, like most other lash adhesives. Makes the lashes very comfortable to wear! Just out of curiousity – is it just a new stopper, or is it actually a new syringe?

Dear Debbie,
I have replaced both the syringe and the cap!

TLC Mineral Makeup Applied On ScoobyDoo Movie

August 31,2008

Summer is over and it's time to get to work. Tana has developed a new makeup line called TLC Mineral Make Up. She has been using her TLC mineral-based makeup on the actors. Tana knew there was a market for a new, clean makeup solution, so she spent 2 years developing a formula with minerals, essential oils, vitamin E, vitamin A, grapeseed extract and sunscreen. I noticed how clean and light the makeup looked. The mineral makeup seemed to leave a glow on their faces. Touch-ups were fast and easy on set. Remember a few years back when Air-brushed Makeup was all the rage? Well, no more! Many of the makeup artists would find that the touchups were difficult once the makeup was applied by the airbrush. The makeup would look streaky and patchy when they tried to repair an area. Tana would touch up the actors between sets, by applying the TLC mineral makeup powder onto a soft, natural bristle brush for a smooth, blended look with no edges.
TLC mineral foundation powders all have a sunscreen of 25SPF. And that saves time. This is a great way of giving the actors the sun protection without the heavy, sunscreen creams under the makeup. Many sunscreen creams would clog the skin pores and create blemishes on the actors. And now with the HD, Widescreen, Plasma, and LCD TV, the makeup artists have realized that every blemish, crease and wrinkle are seen even more than ever!

Check out Tana's full makeup line at:
http://www.tlcminerals.com

How Do I Remove Permanent Eyelashes?

May 13, 2008
I thought maybe a few of you would want to see this email.

Hi, Kandace.
I'm hoping you can help me. I had lash extensions applied 7 days ago. Just after the aesthetician finished applying them with some type of warm glue, my eyes burned like crazy. It discontinued after approximately 45 minutes and she said I was a great client, that most others cried through the entire process. I am now trying to remove them because there must be more glue on one eye than the other and it is "pinching" my real lashes, irritating my eyelid. I have tried baby oil and baby oil with vaseline. These are not budging. I called the aesthetician and she said she could remove them for me but it would irritate my eyes further and I should "keep using baby oil and they will come off". I have tried for 45 minutes on my left eye and the "glue" is still so dry and hard I don't know what to do. Can you please give me some insight or what I need to buy to remove these??? I would much rather learn to use a kit on my own than have this "hard, dry" feeling at the base of my eyelids. Thank you! Karen in Houston

Hi Karen,
Sorry to here about your mishap. I have also tryed the Permanent glue for eyelash extensions. It usually is made from cyano acyralate (crazy glue) and the stinging and odour is the formaldehyde. It is really harsh stuff.
Make sure you do not try and remove it yourself. You will end up pulling out your own lashes. Then it will take up to 6 months for your lashes to grow back.
Go back to your aesthetician , she will have the proper remover for that type of glue.

Thank you, Kandace.
I called her but she said it would be less painful if I used baby oil and took time removing them myself; she said what she would use to remove them would burn my eyes much more, so . . . . I used ice to attempt to change the poperty of the glue, then baby oil and vaseline for approximately 3-1/2 hours last evening to finally remove the extensions and yes, the vast majority of my previously long lashes. I slept with Locoid Lipocream (a hydrocortisone cream) and Biafine (a topical emulsion) applied to my eyelids and they are still too tender to even attempt makeup.

Do you think, if the majority of my eyebrows did not grow back after plucking them in high school 30 years ago, that my eyelashes may not grow back either? I don't want to panic now, but I am very upset that the aesthetician indicated that humidity, water and oil might cause the lashes to come off; however, in reality, it has actually been a nightmare trying to remove them.

Thank you so much. The glue was simply too irritating to my eyelids and going on the advice of the aesthetician, I have indeed pulled my own lashes out.

Again, thank you for your response, Kandace.

Response To Eyelash Kits And Eyelash Glues

january 21,2008
I had this letter emailed to me back in November 07.
Hi, Kandace,

I have tried two kinds of glue, yours in black (I Love My Lashes) and the Lash Tite in clear. The Lash Tite leaves a dandruff like residue, but that may reduce drastically as I get more accomplished at application. However, the toxic smell of it is a concern and turn off.

Your black glue ( I Love My Lashes) in syringe works well without the toxic feel. I'm getting better at application so the gloppy over-mascara-ed look is improving. One problem I have is that I cannot get just a one-application amount out of the syringe. No matter how slowly, gently I try, about 20% floods out each time. That makes using this adhesive very expensive.

I just did a touch up today and it went exceedingly well. Much less glop at the adhesion spot.

My touch up before this all washed off in my first shower???? Maybe there was some kind of residue on my lashes prior to application. I have no other explanation, do you?

The critical point for me in considering your adhesive is to find a way to just get a drop out instead of a big puddle. Any ideas?

Thanks for your service; I love the lash kit(I Love My Lashes). Even though there is no word yet on the writers strike settling, there are still Feature Films that have been written. Now is a great time for these films to find top notch technical crew in Vancouver.
I have begun working on a feature film called, " Traveling".
The leading lady is Jennifer Aniston, and the lead actor is Aaron Ackhart.

Now, don't get too excited, I'm not working on Jen's hair. She has brought up all her own peeps, including body guards and costumer designers.

This feature film, "Traveling", will be shooting here for the next 2 months. I met with Charles Porlier, who has been a makeup artist for nearly 30 years. He and I worked together on one of the biggest budget feature films of its time "Mission To Mars". We spent a summer (2000), working with great actors such as Tim Robbins, Gary Sinise, and Jerry O'Connell.
Charles has created a fabulous institute for up coming Makeup Artists , who want to achieve the highest form of makeup techniques in film making. In the past 4 years, he has changed a local Film School into a world renowned Technical Institute. VFS Makeup Design Program for Film & Television receives hundreds of applicants a year but only a few, 16 to be exact, per class, will be interviewed and then chosen by Charles to experience and learn Makeup Artistry for Film. This year, the makeup class has students from Japan, Greece, U.K., California, New York and Canada. From the airbrush/ beauty makeup, to computer labs for facial reconstruction, to body casting stations, to ventilated FX rooms, this school has the creative edge.

Check out Vancouver Film School at:
http://www.vfs.com

Test your Lipsticks For Lead - Breast Cancer Alert

A very interesting article was emailed to me and I know this would be of great interest to my readers.
From: Dr. Nahid Neman (breast cancer unit) at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada
Please share this with all the females you care about.

Recently, a lipstick brand called “Red Earth” decreased the price from $67.00 to $9.90. It contained lead. Lead is a chemical, which causes cancer! The lipstick brands that contain lead are: CHRISTIAN DIOR, LANCOME, CLINIQUE, Y.S.L., ESTEE LAUDER, SHISEIDO, RED EARTH (LIP GLOSS), CHANEL (LIP CONDITIONER), and MARKET AMERICA-MOTNES LIPSTICK.
The higher the lead content, the greater the chance of causing cancer. After doing a test on lipsticks, it was found that Y.S.L Lipstick contained the most amount of lead! Watch out for those lipsticks, which are supposed to stay longer. If your lipstick stays longer, it is because of the higher content of lead.
Here is the test you can do yourself:

1. apply some lipstick on the back of your hand.
2. use a gold ring to scratch on the lipstick
3. If the lipstick COLOR changes to Black, then you know the lipstick contains lead

Please send this information to all your girlfriends, wives and female family members. This is a fabulous look for an party, wedding, or just to look totally glam! Putting on bottom eyelashes is easy to do, too! Apply a single coat of mascara to the bottom lashes only as a fill in. Then attach one flare lash with a small amount of glue, to the outer edge of your bottom eyelashes. You may only need to apply 2 or 3 flare lashes. I was the Hair Designer on that show. Every actor needed a specific look for their character. Josh Holloway, was such an easy going kind of guy. He has that down home, southern country style that made him lovable. Josh's character had to be a small town, unemployed, drifter type. I really couldn't change the length of his hair since he needed the same length of hair to continue filming the television series, Lost. Every day, he came into the trailer and greeted me with a smile and a big hug. His hair had bleached out from filming previously in Hawaii, that everyday I would put in a Fanci Full, Chocolate Kiss Color Mouse to darken his look to make him tougher looking . Then I would blow dry his hair and add a little Redken Lush Whip texture cream. And before he left the make up trailer he always thanked us all. His mama taught him well!
Sarah Wayne Callies, was easy going and very much into helping me create her , trashy, small town look. Her hair was long and colored auburn previously from the series, Prison Break. I couldn't change the length of her hair since she would be going back to film the second year of Prison Break. But Sarah was into having a hair color change. I decided to put in lots of chunky blonde highlights by using the Redken Powder Bleach and 30 Volume Redken Peroxide . The ultra light blonde streaks, mixed in with her auburn hair, gave her a small town, do it yourself, hair color look. It was Perfect! The script was broken down into a lot of days which means I needed to have a lot of hair changes. Sarah loved it. She had never played a character like this before and so she really wanted her hair style exaggerated.
Some of the filming was on top of Mt.Seymour. Jack Osborne, and his Special Effects team, had to create a winter cabin that was covered in fake snow in October. It looked fantastic!
The Vancouver local production company was Brightlight Pictures and Shawn Williamson was our producer. Other feature films , that I worked on with Shawn and his company Brightlight Pictures, White Noise 2 (starring Nathan Fillion and Katie Sackoff) and Edison Force(starring LL Cool J, Justin Timberlake, Kevin Spacey). Now , I could tell you more stories about these movies too, but that's another blog for later!

check out other hair products at:
www.redken.com

Working on the T.V. series - Supernatural

I have been having a great time working on the Supernatural television series. I have been filling in as the Key Hairstylist for 2 weeks now. Jensen Ackels, who plays Dean (the older brother), and I go way back to when we worked together on the Dark Angel series. Jensen has thick, blonde hair so I blow dry the sides flat and the top, front is blow dried straight up. It's styled into a slight fohawk by using American Crew D:fi d:struct. The other lead actor is Jared Padaleski who plays the younger, smart ass brother, Sam. Jared has thick, dry, wavey, course hair. He looks best when his hair is styled in a casual, natural look. Jared's hair looks best when it's not blow dried. Jared needs hair smoothing creams like KMS Hair Play Configure Creme and Bumble and Bumble Grooming Cream. I find that with the humidity outside and the hot lights of the studio will make Jared's hair fuzzy. So a little Grooming Creme is applied every few hours.

check out American Crew products;
www.americancrew.com

check out Bb products at:
www.bumbleandbumble.com

T.V. I just received an email today saying that it will air on Saturday, September 1st on TNT. This is a movie with a definite all star cast. The lead is the handsome, rugged man, Josh Holloway (Lost-series), the lovely Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break-series), the young boy Blake Woodruff (Cheaper By The Dozen), and Dule Hill (Psych-series) and Joel Edgerton. For instance, we know about artificial eyelashes, artificial implants, artificial limbs, artificial insemination, artificial life forms, artificial sugars, artificial flowers, artificial wood. Now you can have artificial lawn! Artificial turf was once used only on putting greens and soccer fields. More and more cities are banning grass landscaping. Do you realize how many gallons of fresh water is used to water your lawn? How about the fertilizers, weed killers, and moss control pesticides that you put on your grass? Where do you think it goes? Right back into your city's water system. How about the noise pollution and the emissions from the lawn mower and the weed wacker. This all adds up to Global Warming!
Artificial turf/grass can be installed quickly and easily. It's like installing carpet.. but it's outside. Did you know that Artificial grass is made from recycled pop bottles! Which means this turf can last for many , many years. Prices are similar to laying carpet which is more than real grass, but hey, I can sit back and admire my lawn ... without any maintenance. It's always green, it's always manicured, and it looks just like the real thing!

Check out Artificial Turf, Vancouver, Canada at:
www.4seasonturf.com

Interested in Modern Interior Design in Vancouver, Canada, check out:
www.modmod.ca

Keep in Fashion - Modern Interior Design

Those of you who like the latest color trend in lipsticks and eyeshadows, I am sure you are the same way in your home. Sometimes adding a few fake individual eyelashes to the corners of your eyes can give you an appearance of young, alert, bright eyes. If you seem to be losing eyelashes or pulling eyelashes, you can use eyelash glue and a few fake eye lashes to correct this problem. I have been working on the television series called, Supernatural. Our lovely guest star Lauren Cohen has been filming in Vancouver on the Supernatural episode of , "Bad Day at Black Rock". Lauren Cohen has young, beautiful eyes, but unfortunately we have been filming at night, so to keep Lauren looking bright eyed and alert, her makeup artist Shannon Coppin has added a few individual flared eyelashes to the corners of Lauren's eyes. What a difference it makes! Some of you like dyeing eyelashes. But this won't make them look longer or thicker. Long eyelashes gives you a younger look. And thick eyelashes gives you a brighter look. This combination is what the actors want and need. So if you have thinning eyelashes or missing eyelashes ... here is your solution!

order your eyelash extensions, do it yourself kit:
www.ilovemylashes.com

See more of the Supernatural series:
indb.com

Microdermabration - Can you Really Do It Yourself

June 8, 2007
I got to work on the movie set of "Tortured" a few minutes early to try out a new Microdermabration system that you can perform on yourself in just minutes. A half an hour in the hair and makeup trailer was all I needed to prepare and use the Crystalift Microdermabration System. The Crystalift is an easy, do it yourself, exfoilating/resurfacing system for your skin. I began by cleansing my face with an oil-free cleanser and drying my face completely. Then I started with my chin, working the wand slowly across the skin. You feel a slight scratching and sucking feeling which didn't hurt or irritate the skin. I did my entire face in less than 10 minutes, until the capsule of crystals ran out. I had turned the dial to the highest position for the full effect. If I compared Crystalift to a Microdermabration Treatment from the spa, I would say it was not as effective or as deep of a pore cleanser, but definitely noticed my skin looked fresher, smoother and my makeup base went on evenly. So then I asked the actor Cole Hauser, if he would try out the mini facial. I got him to relax in the makeup chair while I gave him a treatment with the Crystalift (meduim setting). When I finished , he was so relaxed he wanted me to do it again. Cole's face looked brighter and fresher. Cole will definitely have another treatment next week.

To purchase your own microdermabration system, go to:
www.crystalift.com

Guys Need A Little TLC For Their Hair

June 5, 2007
Tricks of the Trade – male baldness and thinning
Working on the movie “Tortured” has quite a few male characters. The Actor, Jon Cryer (2 and ½ men) has medium brown hair that is extremely fine and thin all over. First, I use a cream makeup base (Couve) designed for masking out Alopecia (balding). Couve comes in a full range of colors from blonde to redhead to black. Couve is applied with a sponge, directly on the scalp all over the head. Then the MAC eye shadow powered in medium brown (brun) is applied with a thick makeup brush, on top of the Couve makeup. And finally, a sprinkle of Toppik in Medium Brown. Toppik (hair building filler) has little hair–like fibers that look like real hair. Then I comb the hair lightly into place, not to disturb any of the fibers underneath. A light spray all over the hair of Redken Super Strength Finishing Spray #23, will set the fibers into place and will hold all day (12 hours) on a movie set.

check out hair products at:
www.redken.com

check out great makeup at:
www.maccosmetics.com

for Toppic go to:
www.hollynorth.com

Lawrence Fishburne and Cole Hauser - Lead Roles in Feature film

May 14, 2007
Started working today on a new movie. So, we called in the professionals at Glow Skin Care. They came to his hotel room and set up the Microdermabration and the Cold Laser Treatment machines. It took just 1 hour to resurface his face and make his skin smooth and fresh looking without any redness. After seeing such great results on Leonard's skin, I booked a treatment for the following week. Cold Laser is also known as low level laser OR low level light OR LLLT. The session started off with a complete skin analysis. I usually give myself a moisture mask and a facial scrub once a week. But I was surprised how much work I needed to improve the texture and look of my face. Donna from Glow Skin Care, started with the Microdermabration, which cleaned and resurfaced my face. Then she used the red light laser for my acne scars, pigmentation spots, and fine lines around my eyes. She then switched over to the blue light laser, to treat the broken capillaries and the deeper lines on my forehead, each time applying a different treatment gel to target the problem area. After my treatment, which by the way is painless, she applied Clayton Shagal Collagen Gel all over my face, for moisture. Then a thin layer of Clayton Shagal Elastin Gel for elasticity and firmness. My face felt tingly all over. There was no redness, my skin felt smoother, the fine lines around my eyes had disappeared, the pores on my nose had shrunk, and the orange peel texture was gone. Cold Laser Therapy can also help to reduce scars, stretch marks, spider veins, rosacea, psoriasis, dark circles. Cold Laser can help in hair loss and skin lightening and reduce cellulite. Prices range from $120 - $250. A series of 6 treatments are recommended for best results.

Microdermabration and spa treatments: Bianches, Vancouver 604-732-7265
Visit their website at: www.bianches.com

For Cold Laser Therapy, call Glow Skin Care, in Vancouver 604-961-8439

Acrylic Nails, They're Strong & Look Great - Sarah Loved Them

April 3,2007
Being a hairstylist in the film industry, makes it hard to look your best. Because of working long hours, I never have time to color my roots, get a haircut, buy groceries, workout or get your nails done. Speaking of nails, my hands are in and out of water constantly because of washing and coloring hair. When I am working with wigs and hair extensions, I use spirit gum adhesive and 99% alcohol. The nail bed becomes soft and sometimes discolored because of hair color. Nail polish will chip off within a day. The gel nails aren’t strong enough either because they will chip off as well. A great alternative is acrylic nails. Acrylic nails seem to last the longest. If they are applied correctly, the nail bed can be made thicker and stronger, but still looking feminine and pretty. I love having the French manicure look. The French manicure look is the most natural look, with a soft pink base and the white tips. There are many different brands out there so be aware of them. If you are Caucasian like me, then you may have a thinner nail bed. In this case, you may want the “flawless finish”, it hides the imperfections. In spring of last year, I was working on the movie, "Whisperer" starring Sarah Wayne Callies, (main actor in the television series, Prison Break). Sarah had acyrlic nails applied. They just polished her look for the character in "Whisperer". She loved them! Acrylic nails can cost about $50 and can be applied within an hour. They will last up to 4 weeks. Then you will have to book another appointment to get a nail fill which will cost about $40. Make sure they don’t convince you to have the gel topcoat because it will chip off easily if your hands are in water.
My 2 favorite nail techs in North Vancouver are;

Darlene at Chrysalis Your Urban Refuge 604-990-1701
Paul at Princess Nails 604-990-2964 their website is:
www.princessnails.ca

The Glam Look of Lashes - Don't Forget your ipod

March 25, 2007
Since my year round job are my clients that come to my home studio, I got up early today to put on a set of eyelash extensions. Tracy loves having the full set of medium flare lashes. I call this the Glam Look. She purchased an Eyelash Extensions Kit to take home with her. She told me later that she convinced her husband to apply a lash flare when one came off. Now he applies the lash extensions whenever one falls out. What a great husband!
As you all well know by now, I’ve been transformed into the night owl. I never really see the light of day. I say good morning to my family at 3:30pm, sometimes I’m still at home to have dinner with them at 5pm, and then it’s off to work. The set location has changed. So now you have to somehow focus on figuring out the map attached to the call sheet. You sit in your car, turn on the dome light and spend 10 minutes figuring out the directions. And of course for my assistant Calla, she needs to find a route that will take her right past a Starbucks Coffee.
I have this young, bubbly, assistant. Her name is Calla Dreyer. We call her the Hair and Makeup Swing. Now that doesn’t mean the same as “swinger”. She has this cute little laugh that no matter how serious the deal is, she’ll make a joke of it. Like I always say ”It’s not brain surgery we’re just making a movie”.
I’m also working with a wonderful, funny, Annie Lennox look alike, Kiwi Makeup Artist by the name of Amanda McGowan. She keeps the pace in the hair and make up trailer, with her traveling ipod and docking station cranked with Ambient to House to R& B and sometimes even the Classical Bach tunes. The ipod video and ipod nano, all fit into these docking sound systems. They are great to have in our hair and makeup trailer because of the small size and the big sound. On weekends, Amanda can pack it up in just seconds, put it in her purse and take it home with her. I keep my ipod video in my docking sound system in my salon at home. It’s small enough to sit on the window ledge and still has a great full sound.
.
Check out your mac store at;
www.macipod.com
Amada McGowan has a makeup site at
www.amandamcgowan.com

The Cat Eye Look - Eyelash Extensions & MACCosmetics - Keeping warm on film sets

March 19,2007
I managed to get a few hours of sleep this morning, and had time to put a set of eyelash extensions on my eyes before arriving on the movie set. I applied 3 flare lashes to the outer corners of each eye. Then I applied a little black, non waterproof Pro Lash mascara by MAC, to the remaining lashes to blend together. This creates a look that makes your eyes look bigger. I call this the Cat Eye Look. Then I apply Prep+Prime Eye (medium) by MAC, for the dark circles around my eyes. Then a little eyeliner from MAC Fluidline (blitz & glitz). I think that the grips and electrics even noticed my big, bright blue eyes today.
Just so all of you understand what happens on the movie set. We all wear black. We don’t want to be noticed. You ask why, well we do this to blend into the background. You never want to be caught in front of the camera, especially in your outdated baby blue flared hipsters. Our crew uniform consists of many layers. Let’s start with the long underwear, which of course must wick away any sweat against your body. Then comes the multiple layers of Polartec fleece, then the North Face puffy coat and top it all off with the Halley Hansen Gortex Jacket. Now of coarse its raining or will be a some point of the evening so I put on my wick away thermal socks with the adhesive Toe Warmers attached to the bottom of my socks and now I slip on the Sorrel waterproof boots. I pull on my gloves and finally I wrap a soft cashmere scarf around my neck, it’s my only luxury item. Then I put on my toque! For those of you living in the States, if you have ever been to Canada you would know that a toque is a French Canadian word for hat.

Hand warmers , makeup supplies and other film accessories in Vancouver go to:
www.hollynorth.com
Looking for makeup we use on the actors? For all of you guys out there who don’t know what a Call Sheet is, it gives you all the details for the day at hand…arrival for actors, makeup times, out of makeup times, set times for actors, start times for crew members, catering breakfast times, lunch break times, weather reports, scenes to be filmed, pickup times for producers and director. But there are 2 things we never know, your bathroom breaks and the quitting time. But of course no one ever sticks to the schedule. There’s always the domino effect. For instance, if the actor Lukas Haas’ pick up time changes, then his driver gets caught in rush hour traffic, he will arrive 2 hours late. Now the director is ready for him and wants to begin shooting the scenes. Lukas jumps into the Makeup & Hair trailer, no time for small talk, no extras today. I quickly spray on Redken Guts Spray Foam. The Guts foam is similar to using mouse but it’s much faster and not as messy as mouse. All I do is spray the Guts foam directly all over Lukas’s hair. Now, I must turn the blow dryer on high heat and squealing high speed. It would normally take me 20 minutes to fluff and buff Lukas’s hair, but I’m working my magic in 7 minutes flat. I finish his controlled messy look with a little Sebastian Crude Clay for texture and low shine. It’s raining again tonight so I have to spray a little of the Redken Headset 25 Extra Strength Finishing Spray. Now he will go to Amanda’s make up chair for a quick 15 minutes. He won’t be getting his arm tattoos today, the director say they won’t be seen on camera. Amanda will air brush the Revlon Colorstay makeup base. She’s done! So now we have shaved off 35 minutes. Too bad they won’t notice how fast we put him through Hair and Make up. The Director and Producers are glad to see him on set. But of course we don’t hear a word from the crew on set. Like they say in film “no news is good news”

The Redken Guts Volume Spray Foam is great for adding lots of body in fine, limp hair. It’s great for guys and gals.
Check out Redken at; www.redken.com
The Sebastian Crude Clay is modeling clay, great for short hair. It has a pliable, strong hold with a real matte finish.
Check out Sebastian products at; www.sebastian-intl.com

American Crew & Redken - actors love them

Mar 15,2007
The actor, Luis Chavez who is one of the 4 thugs in the movie, “While She Was Out’. Luis steps up into the Make up & Hair trailer. I get my good morning hug before he sits down into the chair. I start with a light misting of bottled water, which is replaced in my spritz bottle. Then I squeeze a fair amount of American Crew Gel into the palm of my hand and work it thru Luis’s damp hair. Now for the low hum of the warm blow dryer that puts him into a trance. We casually talk about how many hours of sleep we all got the night before, the emails we received from our friends today, and what scenes he will be doing later tonight. I’ve blow-dried his hair completely sticking up everywhere like a Don King punker. Then I add the American Crew Tea Tree Extra Firm Styling Cream on my fingertips. I then rub my hands together and work the styling cream through the ends of the hair only. I spend another few minutes twisting the hair together into 2-inch sections making them look randomly chunky. This styling cream adds lots of texture and a pliable hold. It also has a low shine. And then a final touch of Redken Headset 25 Extra Strength Finishing Spray since it is raining hard outside tonight, I’ll need to keep it looking this way for a few hours. The great thing about these hair products, is that they are all water based, and will leave no build up in the hair and they will wash out easily without a residue. These are great products for the guys to use and Luis likes how great they smell too.

Check out the full line of American Crew Tea Tree products at www.americancrew.com
and the finishing hair products of Redken at www.redken.com

While She Was Out - Filming in Vancouver

I’m working on a movie called, "While She Was Out". This is an Independent Film. The producers are Don Murphy and Kirk Shaw from Insight Film Studios. Kim Basinger is producing and starring in this movie. The Executive Producers are Kim Basinger and Guillermo del Toro. And for any of you movie buffs out there , Guillermo del Toro wrote and directed Pans Labyrinth . As you all well know, this movie received many Oscars. Pans Labyrinth won in Best Make-up, Best Foreign Film and Best Art Direction. Enough about Pans Labyrinth, let me tell you about this film that I’m working on now. The director of this movie, “While she was out” is a former producer by the name Susan Montford. This film will be done in real time. It is a 90 minute film of Kim Basinger(Della) who drives to the local mall, and finds herself being chased by 4 local thugs. They follow her from the mall parking lot, down country roads and then having her vehicle breakdown in a new subdivision that is vacant. She grabs her toolbox from the trunk of her vehicle. But of course I’m not going to tell you how it ends. A real suspense thriller. We began filming February12 and will be finished somewhere around the 23 of March,2007. I’ll keep you posted.

Welcome to I Love My Lashes!

Hello and welcome to my eyelash extension and beauty aid blog!
Check back often for the latest product info and techniques.
